Call for Photo-Action: Your farm. Your photo. Your voice.

Welcome,
You are invited to take part in a photovoice project entitled “Your farm. Your photo. Your voice.”, organized by the SWIFT project team. SWIFT (Supporting Women-Led Innovations in Farming and Rural Territories - details: SWIFT) is a 4-year EU-funded research project that started in 2023, which aims at strengthening the position of women and LGBTQI+ farmers in agriculture. With this call we want to make your lived experiences as female farmers visible - through photographs or drawings accompanied by short narratives.

Objective

The objective is to document, reflect on and share your daily lived experiences as female farmers and LGBTQI+ farmers and make visible how feminism shows up (or does not) in your daily life, and what farming could look like if it were more feminist. The contributions will be part of an exhibition, to amplify your voices and facilitate discussions. The method we use for that is called Photovoice.

Photovoice is a participatory research method in which people document and share their experiences through photographs. Images are paired with personal narratives and analyzed collectively.

Photovoice contributions usually consist of

  • photos or creative alternatives (drawing, collage, or other visual form) capturing specific aspects of the participants’ life
  • a narrative explaining what the images show and why they have been chosen
  • collective analysis
  • exhibition of the images


Your Contribution

There are two ways for you to contribute to this project (each of them are equally appreciated):

 

  1. Short contributions, which consist of:

  • A photo, drawing, or other creative form: Take one or more photos in response to the following two questions. You may also choose a drawing, collage, or any other creative form.

Question 1: How does feminism show up in your everyday life as a farmer —  or how does it not?
→ Take one or more photos (or draw/create) how and where feminism is visible in your daily practices or actions in agriculture as a farmer. Capture places, people, actions or practices where you see or experience it.
Question 2: What would farming look like if it were more feminist?
→ Take one or more photos (or draw/create) that represent your vision of agriculture and show how feminism plays a role in it. These can show real examples or symbolic representations.

 

  • A narrative / short text: Write a short text to accompany your image (a few sentences to a short paragraph). Explain what the image shows, why you took it, and how it relates to the question. This text is part of the research.

  • Submit your contribution: Upload your images and text  – until June 12th. 

  1. Full Photovoice Process: The full research process goes a little deeper. In addition to the points above, it includes:

  • Collective reflection, photo selection and discussion (june): We review contributions together (online and/or in person), identify overarching themes and select images for the exhibition (online or in person, approx. 2 h)
  • In-depth interview (by arrangement): A deeper conversation about your images and experiences. I am happy to visit your farm — or we can meet online.

Guidelines for Contributing and Dissemination

  • There are no right or wrong answers/images/responses. Your perspective, your interpretation, your story — that is what matters.
  • You can submit a photo, a drawing, a collage, or any other visual form that captures your response to one or both questions.


Most important: You remain the owner of your photos and narratives. Publication — with your name or anonymously — requires your explicit consent.

The material will be used for:
•  Virtual Photovoice- exhibition on the SWIFT platforms, including the SWIFT website and portal (SWIFT project; SWIFT Portal)

•  Social media sharing by SWIFT partner institutions (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)

•  An exhibition of selected contributions will be shown online and in person at BOKU Vienna in autumn 2026.

•  a master’s thesis in Climate Change and Societal Transformation at BOKU University Vienna, conducted by Andrea Hlinka-Fröschl.
 

Who can contribute

  • We invite women and LGBTQI+ farmers or women-led farming groups engaged in agroecological or sustainable practices.
  • No technical experience needed — authentic stories and visions are what matter most!

How to contribute

To participate, please read the Participant information  and tick the box confirming the data protection declaration at the bottom of the page. Then answer the questions and upload the photos and the text.
